Before we go anywhere with this, a word of warning.
This modification is for EXTREMELY EXPERIENCED RIDERS
ONLY. Now that the safety blurb is out of the way,
here we go...
This is a trick I used to use on my 1928 Indian Scout
hillclimber. It is not cheap, and it can be very
hazardous to your health. Start by increasing your carb
size. On the Savage, go from the stock 40mm unit to a
42mm Mikuni flat slide model.
Mext, replace the stock rear pulley with one off of a big
twin HD or Yamaha Road Star. Set the belt as tight as
is safe on the belt tension tester, the little brass
plunger that came in the tool kit.
Add 1/2 fluid ounce of octane booster to a full tank
of high test gas, or run 108 octane racing gas. You will
need to have the cylinder head and cylinder cut for a
Loc-wire headfgasket, the stocker will not take this abuse.
Tires will need to be swapped out for stickier units,
read superbike or racing grade.
The bike will no longer pass safety or emissions tests
if this is done. This is for the hardcore rider who
wants the most out of this sub-liter model. I wouldn't
do this to mine, but someone asked me how to do a true
performance build up on the Savage. As for durablity,
VERY LITTLE. Tires will last about 500 miles or so on
the rear, belt maybe 1000. Doesn't matter, as the motor
won't stay together more than a few hours at a time.
Again... Don't do this. I only posted it in response
to an e-mail I received from a gearhead who owns a
Savage. I've already buried too many riding friends.
